Install a GFCI Outlet (Part 2): Understanding Line vs. Load for Downstream Protection

In our previous post, How to Install a GFCI Outlet  we covered the basics of replacing a standard outlet with a GFCI. We focused on the simplest scenario: connecting only the incoming power to get that single outlet protected.

However, if you looked at the back of your new GFCI outlet, you probably noticed it has four screw terminals, not just two. Two of those terminals were likely covered by a piece of yellow tape.

Those extra screws under the tape are the LOAD terminals, and understanding how they differ from the LINE terminals is the key to unlocking the full safety potential of your GFCI circuit.

Today, we are moving beyond the basic install to explain exactly what LINE and LOAD mean, why they matter, and how to use them to protect other outlets in your home

Before doing any electrical work, always turn off the power at the breaker box and verify that the power is truly off using a non-contact voltage tester. Electrical DIY is safe only when you follow proper safety protocols.

What Is the Difference Between LINE and LOAD?

Think of electricity in your house like water flowing through pipes. The power has to come from somewhere and go to somewhere.

1. The LINE Terminals (Incoming Power)

The LINE terminals are the "Input." These are the screws where you connect the wires that are bringing power directly from your home’s breaker box (electrical panel) to the outlet.

A GFCI outlet must have power connected to the LINE terminals to function. If you only have one set of wires (one hot, one neutral) coming into your electrical box, you will only use the LINE terminals.

2. The LOAD Terminals (Outgoing Power)

The LOAD terminals are the "Output." These screws deliver power from the GFCI outlet out to other standard outlets further down the same electrical circuit.

The magic of the LOAD terminals is that any standard, inexpensive outlet connected to them receives "downstream protection." If the GFCI detects a ground fault (a shock hazard), it will trip and cut power not only to itself but also to every outlet connected via the LOAD terminals.

When Should You Use the LOAD Terminals?

You should only use the LOAD terminals if you have a "feed-through" circuit. This is when the electrical box contains two sets of cables: one bringing power in, and another leaving the box to feed power to the next outlet in line.

A common example is in a kitchen or bathroom. You might have three outlets along the countertop, but only the first one needs to be an expensive GFCI outlet. By utilizing the LOAD terminals on that first outlet, you can protect the other two cheaper, standard outlets without needing to buy three GFCIs.

Do NOT use the LOAD terminals if:

  • You only have one set of wires in the box.

  • You want the other outlets on the circuit to remain powered even if the GFCI trips.

How to Install a GFCI Using LINE and LOAD

If you have determined you have a feed-through circuit and want downstream protection, here is how to wire it.

Step 1: Identify your incoming (LINE) and outgoing (LOAD) wires.

This is the most critical step. If you misidentify these wires, the GFCI will not trip correctly when tested.

If you don't know which cable is which, you must safely test them:

  1. Turn off the breaker.

  2. Separate all the wires so they aren't touching anything.

  3. Turn the breaker back on.

  4. Carefully use your voltage tester to see which black (hot) wire has power. That cable is your LINE. The cable with no power is your LOAD.

  5. Turn the breaker off again before proceeding.

Step 2: Connect the Ground Wire

Connect the bare copper (or green) ground wires from both cables together, and add a pigtail wire to connect them to the green grounding screw on the GFCI.

Step 3: Connect the LINE Wires

Look at the back of the GFCI. Locate the terminals clearly marked LINE.

  • Connect the Incoming Black (Hot) wire to the Brass screw (usually the top right).

  • Connect the Incoming White (Neutral) wire to the Silver screw (usually the top left).

Step 4: Connect the LOAD Wires

Remove the yellow tape covering the LOAD terminals.

  • Connect the Outgoing Black (Hot) wire to the Brass screw on the LOAD side.

  • Connect the Outgoing White (Neutral) wire to the Silver screw on the LOAD side.

Tip: Make sure you do not "cross-wire." Both neutral wires (white) must go to silver screws, and both hot wires (black) must go to brass screws.

Step 5: Secure and Finish

Carefully fold the wires back into the box, screw the GFCI into place, and attach your wallplate. (If you’re using USVOLTRA’s Screwless Wallplates, now is the time to snap that flawless cover on!)

Testing Your Downstream Protection

Once the installation is complete, restore power at the breaker and reset the GFCI outlet.

  1. Test the GFCI itself: Plug a lamp into the GFCI outlet. Press the TEST button. The lamp should go off. Press RESET. The lamp should come back on.

  2. Test Downstream Protection: Move the lamp to one of the other standard outlets downstream that you connected via the LOAD terminals. While the lamp is on, go back to the GFCI and press the TEST button.

If you wired it correctly, the lamp at the downstream outlet should go dark. This confirms that the standard outlet is now protected by the GFCI upstream.
